Clothing

For all seasons

  • Comfortable walking shoes or sneakers (broken-in)
  • One pair of slightly nicer shoes for evenings (optional)
  • Lightweight layers (t-shirts, long-sleeve tops, light sweater or cardigan)
  • Comfortable trousers / jeans / skirts
  • One modest outfit for churches and the Vatican (shoulders and knees covered)
  • Light scarf or shawl (useful for churches and cooler evenings)
  • Underwear and socks for each day + 1–2 extras
  • Sleepwear
  • Light jacket or rain jacket (depending on season)

Season-specific additions

  • Spring (March–May) & Autumn (September–October)
Light sweater, light jacket, mix of short and long sleeves.
  • Summer (June–August)
Breathable fabrics, shorts/skirts, sun hat, sunglasses, extra t-shirts. Nights can still be warm.
  • Winter (November–February)
Warm sweater or fleece, proper jacket, scarf, gloves, warmer trousers. Waterproof shoes recommended.
Note: Dress code reminder
Shoulders and knees must be covered to enter St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums, and many churches. A light scarf solves this easily.

Footwear (Most Important Item)

Rome’s cobblestones are beautiful but brutal on the wrong shoes.

  • Primary pair: Comfortable, supportive walking shoes or sneakers
  • Optional: One lighter pair for evenings
  • Avoid brand-new shoes and high heels for daytime

Many travellers regret bringing only stylish shoes.

Packing Tips Specific to Rome
